Congrats to Lukas Rossi for winning the top slot on "Rock Star: Supernova" last night.
Supernova is the band put together by former Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee, former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted and former Guns N' Roses guitarist Gilby Clarke. "Rock Star: Supernova" is the circus they built around the popular band members to create a summer long reality show/talent contest in search of a lead singer. They will now finish their album with Lukas at the helm and kickoff their 28 city tour of the USA and Canada on New Years Eve.
Unfortunately, a Judge issued a preliminary injunction Tuesday barring that band from performing, recording, or selling music under the Supernova name. As it turns out, there's a band in Southern California that has called itself Supernova since 1991 and has recorded three albums under the name sued CBS, the show's participants and Mark Burnett Productions in June claiming unfair competition and trademark infringement.
You'd think that after all the money and marketing that went into the show and promoting the band, that famed producer Mark Burnett would have at least cleared the rights to the bands name.

Except, they're not quite kids anymore. But, that didn't stop The Who from embarking on their first World Tour in over twenty years. The tour kicked off in Philadelphia on Tuesday to mixed reviews.
I'm a huge fan of The Who, and have been for close to thirty years now. Quadrophenia remains at the top of my playlist, amongst other Who favorites. But come on guys. Enough is enough. I'm sure it's a great show and all but... it can't come close to even the last TWO "Final" World Tours, which I did see. This poster, taken roughly forty years ago, shows the band at their peak... still hip, edgy, heavy, and... yes, vigorous. This is the way we all like to think of them. I still remember during the last world tour, more than twenty years ago, Pete Townshend had to tone down his classic windmills at that time due to his frail fingers. Plus, at this point they're really just half-a-Who, with Roger Daltrey and Townshend being the only surviving members.
As much as I love The Who, I think it's time they, and fellow grandpa rockers The Rolling Stones (another favorite of mine), hang up their dancing shoes and let us remember them the way they should be... rebellious young rock stars who brought new depths to Rock 'N Roll.

Todays big announcement from Apple came down and it was all about the iPod and it's iTunes cohort. A line-up of new and improved iPods - leaner, meaner, and cheaper - including the new iPod Shuffle standing at an astounding 1.07 inches high and weighing in at about half an ounce, with a 1 GB hard drive, debuting at $79. The Shuffle also has a nifty clip built on the back, enabling you to clip it almost anywhere on the go.
Along with the new iPods is the release of the equally impressive new iTunes 7. Boasting all kinds of new features, iTunes 7 now enables you select your media from several new views and has a new download manager section for your iPod, helping you keep all your media organized between devices as well as product updates.
The most impressive announcement though was the stats. We all knew the iPods and Itunes were doing well but, how well you ask?
iPods:
Over 75% Market Share of MP3 players in the U.S.
Over 60 Million units shipped last quarter
Over 3,000 Accessories available
Music sold over iTunes:
88% Market Share of legal music downloads in the U.S.
To date has sold more than 1.5 Billion songs
iTunes is the 5th largest retailer of music in the US, with the top four being physical retail outlets
TV Shows sold over iTunes:
In less than 1 year people have purchased and downloaded over 45 million tv shows
With stats like that the one announcement that came as no surprise was the introduction of movies into iTunes. Beginning today, 75 films are now available via iTunes from the four studios of the Walt Disney Co. New releases will be available the same day as the DVD release for $12.99 / for the first week then will be $14.99, while library titles are $9.99.
Though, the biggest announcement of the day and true tale signs of the future of convergence was... (codename) iTV. A sleak new set-top device (similar to a sliver of the Mac Mini) promising to deliver your media throughout your wireless home and into your TV. iTV will be debuting in the first quarter of 2007 for $299. To find out more on the pros, cons, and current state of iTV and its technology check this interesting take on it entitled "How Apple's iTV Media Strategy Works."
